A mighty fortress

ODJ: a mighty fortress

odj-oct-21

October 21, 2009

God is our refuge
and strength, always ready to help in times
of trouble (v.1).

READ: Psalm 46

You might know of Martin Luther as the father of the Reformation and that he translated the whole Bible into German. But what is less known is that Luther was also a composer of 37 hymns. His best-known hymn, “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God,” is also called “The Battle Hymn of the Reformation.” There are at least 70 different English translations of this hymn. The most popular version, containing the words “A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing,” was translated in 1853.

Luther’s hymn is based on Psalm 46. In that psalm, the author writes of the refuge and protection that God provides in times of trouble (v.1). Things like natural disasters (vv.2-3) are an ever-present reality. The world has often experienced great devastation and destruction caused by earthquakes, hurricanes, and typhoons. And Jesus warned us of a future cataclysmic and cosmic catastrophe (Luke 21:11,25-26; Matthew 24:29-30; Revelation 16:18-21). But no matter what happens, whatever the outward circumstances, those who make God their refuge and strength are safe (Psalm 46:1-3).

We live in a world of conflict (vv.8-9), with war and hostility between nations commonplace. In the last several decades, hundreds of wars have been fought. Yet Jesus spoke of even more and bigger wars (Luke 21:9-10; Matthew 24:6-7) and the final war of the world, Armageddon (Zechariah 14:2-3; Revelation 16:12-16, 19:11-21). The outcome of that apocalyptic battle will be victory for God’s people (Psalm 46:5) and peace for the world (v.9). Twice we are assured that the “Lord of Heaven’s Armies” is with us; our God is our fortress (vv.7,11).

No matter the circumstance, God calls us to “be still, and know that I am God!” (v.10). With hope in Him we sing, “A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing.” —K.T. Sim

ODJ: yielded and still

odj-oct-16

October 16, 2009

Who can command things to happen without the Lord’s permission? (v.37).

READ: Lamentations 3:37-40

Adelaide Pollard, born in 1862 in the US, had
faithfully served God for many years through her
gifts of teaching and writing. Her longtime desire, however, was to be a missionary in Africa. Finally the details were worked out and she was ready to set sail. But then, unexpectedly, she was forced to cancel her plans. Not being able to go left Adelaide disappointed and depressed. God spoke to her heart and she penned these words, “Mold me and make me after Thy will. While I am waiting, yielded and still.” Her complete poem became the well-known hymn “Have Thine Own Way, Lord.”

The prophet Jeremiah had also experienced depression over his circumstances as recorded in the book of Lamentations. He had seen Jerusalem destroyed by the Babylonians and God’s people placed under their harsh rule (Jeremiah 39:1-14, 52:12-14).

But, like Adelaide Pollard, instead of sinking deeper into sorrow, Jeremiah became yielded and still. He realized that his people had been sinning against God. That’s something Adelaide owned up to, as she acknowledged that “man’s own will is the basic sin he commits against God.” Through repentance and looking to God for guidance, both songwriter and prophet were able to see this truth: God is sovereign (Lamentations 3:37). It’s about His will, not our own.

Instead of complaining and becoming bitter (v.39), they wisely chose to examine their ways and “turn back to the Lord” (v.40). This is a wise formula for us to adopt when we face unexpected changes in our plans. As we seek God’s ways, not our own, we’ll find ourselves becoming quiet and still.

In time, the people of Judah were freed and rebuilt the city of Jerusalem. And, in time, Adelaide Pollard was permitted by God to minister for Him in Africa—yielded and still. —Tom Felten

Moon River, wider than a mile,
I'm crossing you in style some day.
Oh, dream maker, you heart breaker,
wherever you're going I'm going your way.
Two drifters off to see the world.
There's such a lot of world to see.
We're after the same rainbow's end--
waiting 'round the bend,
my huckleberry friend,
Moon River and me.

Hillsong - King Of Majesty Lyrics:

You know that I love You
You know that I want to know You so much more
More than I have before

These words are from my heart
These words are not made up
I will live for you, I am devoted to You

King of Majesty, I have one desire
Just to be with You, my Lord
Just to be with You, my Lord

Jesus, You are the Saviour of my soul
And forever and ever, I'll give my praises to You

You know that I love You
You know that I want to know You so much more
More than I have before

These words are from my heart
These words are not made up
I will live for You, I am devoted to You

King of Majesty, I have one desire
Just to be with You, my Lord
Just to be with You, my Lord

Jesus, You are the Saviour of my soul
And forever and ever, I'll give my praises to You
Jesus, You are the Saviour of my soul
And forever and ever, I'll give my praises to You

King of Majesty, I have one desire
Just to be with You, my Lord
Just to be with You, my Lord

Jesus, You are the Saviour of my soul
And forever and ever, I'll give my praises to You
Jesus, You are the Saviour of my soul
And forever and ever, I'll give my praises to You

Hallelujah?

Hey.. What's Hallelujah?? huh??

hehe... gonna give u the definition here... ;o

Hallelujah, Halleluyah, or Alleluia, is a transliteration of the Hebrew word הַלְּלוּיָהּ (Standard Halleluya, Tiberian Halləlûyāh) meaning "praise (הַלְּלוּ) Yah (יָהּ)". It is found mainly in the book of Psalms and has a similar pronunciation in many, but not all, languages. The word is used in Judaism as part of the Hallel prayers, and in Christian praise. It has been accepted into the English language.

In the Bible

The term is used 24 times in the Hebrew Bible (mainly in the book of Psalms, e.g. 111-117, 145-150, where it starts and concludes a number of Psalms) and four times in Greek transliteration in the Christian Book of Revelation.

The word hallelujah occurring in Psalms is a Hebrew request for a congregation to join in praise. It can be translated as "Praise Yah, you people", and is usually worded in English contexts as "Praise ye the Lord" or "Praise the Lord". This is not a direct translation, as Yah represents the first two letters of YHWH, the Hebrew personal name for God, and not the title "lord".[1]

In the Hebrew Bible hallelujah is actually a two-word phrase, not one word. The first part, hallelu, is the second-person imperative masculine plural form of the Hebrew verb hallal.[2] However, "hallelujah" means more than simply "praise Yah", as the word hallel in Hebrew means a joyous praise, to boast in God, or to act madly or foolishly.[3] The second part, Yah, is a shortened form of the name of God YHWH, sometimes rendered in English as "Yahweh" or "Jehovah". The Septuagint translates Yah as Kurios (the LORD). In Psalm 150:6 the Hebrew reads kol han'shamah t'hallel yah;[4] the final word "yah" is translated as "the LORD", or "YHWH". It appears in the Hebrew Bible as הללו~יה and הללו יה. In Psalm 148:1 the Hebrew says "הללו יה hallelu yah". It then says "hallelu eth-YHWH" as if using "yah" and "YHWH" interchangeably. The word "Yah" appears by itself as a divine name in poetry about 49 times in the Hebrew Bible (including hallelu yah), such as in Psalm 68:4-5 "who rides upon the deserts by his name Yah" and Exodus 15:2 "Yah is my strength and song". It also often appears at the end of Israelite theophoric names such as Isaiah "yeshayah(u), Yahweh is salvation" and Jeremiah "yirmeyah(u), Yahweh is exalted".

Halelujah appears in Revelation 19 in Greek transliteration as "allelouia", the great song of praise to God for his triumphant reign. This transliteration also appears in the Septuagint.

Usage by Christians

For most Christians, "Hallelujah" is considered a joyful word of praise to God, rather than an injunction to praise him. In many western denominations, the Alleluia, along with the Gloria in Excelsis Deo, is not spoken or sung in liturgy during the season of Lent, instead being replaced by a Lenten acclamation, while in Eastern Churches, Alleluia is chanted throughout the lent in the beginning of the Matins service, replacing the Theos Kyrios, which is considered more joyful. At the Easter service and throughout the Pentecostarion, Christos anesti is used in the place where Hallelujah is chanted in the western rite.

Among many Christians, the expressions of Hallelujah and Praise the Lord are acceptable, spontaneous expressions of joy, thanksgiving and praise towards God, requiring no specific prompting or call or direction from those leading times of praise and singing.

Interesting?? ^^

ODB

ODB: details, details

*ODB = Our Daily Bread
Details make a difference. Ask the man from Germany who planned to visit his fiancée for Christmas but ended up in snowy Sidney, Montana, instead of sunny Sydney, Australia.

Prepositions in our language seem like insignificant details, but they can make a big difference. The words “in” and “for” are an example.

The apostle Paul wrote, “In everything give thanks” (1 Thess. 5:18). That doesn’t mean we have to be thankful for everything. We need not be thankful for the bad choices someone makes, but we can be thankful in the circumstances because the Lord can use the resulting difficulties for good.

The letter to Philemon illustrates this idea. Paul was imprisoned with Onesimus, a runaway slave. He certainly didn’t have to give thanks for his bad situation. Yet his letter is full of gratitude because he knew that God was using it for good. Onesimus had become something more than a slave; he was now a beloved brother in the Lord (v.16).

Knowing that God can use all things for good is more than enough reason to give thanks in everything. Giving thanks in difficult circumstances is a small detail that makes a big difference. — Julie Ackerman Link

meow~

"A dog is man's best friend." That common saying may contain some truth, but dogs are not the only animal friend whose companionship people enjoy. For many people, a cat is their best friend. Despite what dog lovers may believe, cats make excellent housepets as they are good companions, they are civilized members of the household, and they are easy to care for.

In the first place, people enjoy the companionship of cats. Many cats are affectionate. They will snuggle up and ask to be petted, or scratched under the chin. Who can resist a purring cat? If they're not feeling affectionate, cats are generally quite playful. They love to chase balls and feathers, or just about anything dangling from a string. They especially enjoy playing when their owners are participating in the game. Contrary to popular opinion, cats can be trained. Using rewards and punishments, just like with a dog, a cat can be trained to avoid unwanted behavior or perform tricks. Cats will even fetch!

In the second place, cats are civilized members of the household. Unlike dogs, cats do not bark or make other loud noises. Most cats don't even meow very often. They generally lead a quiet existence. Cats also don't often have "accidents." Mother cats train their kittens to use the litter box, and most cats will use it without fail from that time on. Even stray cats usually understand the concept when shown the box and will use it regularly. Cats do have claws, and owners must make provision for this. A tall scratching post in a favorite cat area of the house will often keep the cat content to leave the furniture alone. As a last resort, of course, cats can be declawed.

Lastly, one of the most attractive features of cats as housepets is their ease of care. Cats do not have to be walked. They get plenty of exercise in the house as they play, and they do their business in the litter box. Cleaning a litter box is a quick, painless procedure. Cats also take care of their own grooming. Bathing a cat is almost never necessary because under ordinary circumstances cats clean themselves. Cats are more particular about personal cleanliness than people are. In addition, cats can be left home alone for a few hours without fear. Unlike some pets, most cats will not destroy the furnishings when left alone. They are content to go about their usual activities until their owners return.

Cats are low maintenance, civilized companions. People who have small living quarters or less time for pet care should appreciate these characteristics of cats. However, many people who have plenty of space and time still opt to have a cat because they love the cat personality. In many ways, cats are the ideal housepet.

Strategies for Writing a Conclusion

Conclusions are often the most difficult part of an essay to write, and many writers feel that they have nothing left to say after having written the paper. A writer needs to keep in mind that the conclusion is often what a reader remembers best. Your conclusion should be the best part of your paper.

A conclusion should

  • stress the importance of the thesis statement,
  • give the essay a sense of completeness, and
  • leave a final impression on the reader.

Suggestions

  • Answer the question "So What?"

Show your readers why this paper was important. Show them that your paper was meaningful and useful.

  • Synthesize, don't summarize

    • Don't simply repeat things that were in your paper. They have read it. Show them how the points you made and the support and examples you used were not random, but fit together.
  • Redirect your readers

    • Give your reader something to think about, perhaps a way to use your paper in the "real" world. If your introduction went from general to specific, make your conclusion go from specific to general. Think globally.

  • Create a new meaning
    • You don't have to give new information to create a new meaning. By demonstrating how your ideas work together, you can create a new picture. Often the sum of the paper is worth more than its parts.
Strategies
  • Echoing the introduction: Echoing your introduction can be a good strategy if it is meant to bring the reader full-circle. If you begin by describing a scenario, you can end with the same scenario as proof that your essay was helpful in creating a new understanding.

    Example

Introduction

From the parking lot, I could see the towers of the castle of the Magic Kingdom standing stately against the blue sky. To the right, the tall peak of The Matterhorn rose even higher. From the left, I could hear the jungle sounds of Adventureland. As I entered the gate, Main Street stretched before me with its quaint shops evoking an old-fashioned small town so charming it could never have existed. I was entranced. Disneyland may have been built for children, but it brings out the child in adults.

Conclusion

I thought I would spend a few hours at Disneyland, but here I was at 1:00 A.M., closing time, leaving the front gates with the now dark towers of the Magic Kingdom behind me. I could see tired children, toddling along and struggling to keep their eyes open as best they could. Others slept in their parents' arms as we waited for the parking lot tram that would take us to our cars. My forty-year-old feet ached, and I felt a bit sad to think that in a couple of days I would be leaving California, my vacation over, to go back to my desk. But then I smiled to think that for at least a day I felt ten years old again.

Challenging the reader: By issuing a challenge to your readers, you are helping them to redirect the information in the paper, and they may apply it to their own lives.

Example

Though serving on a jury is not only a civic responsibility but also an interesting experience, many people still view jury duty as a chore that interrupts their jobs and the routine of their daily lives. However, juries are part of America's attempt to be a free and just society. Thus, jury duty challenges us to be interested and responsible citizens.

  • Looking to the future: Looking to the future can emphasize the importance of your paper or redirect the readers' thought process. It may help them apply the new information to their lives or see things more globally.

    Example

Without well-qualified teachers, schools are little more than buildings and equipment. If higher-paying careers continue to attract the best and the brightest students, there will not only be a shortage of teachers, but the teachers available may not have the best qualifications. Our youth will suffer. And when youth suffers, the future suffers.

Posing questions: Posing questions, either to your readers or in general, may help your readers gain a new perspective on the topic, which they may not have held before reading your conclusion. It may also bring your main ideas together to create a new meaning.

hehe.. hope that this info will benefit u ^^
God bless u :)

BK BK BK.. haha...

Sin, Faith, Duty
1Jesus said to his disciples: “Things that cause people to sin are bound to come, but woe to that person through whom they come.
2It would be better for him to be thrown into the sea with a millstone tied around his neck than for him to cause one of these little ones to sin.
3So watch yourselves.
“If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him.
4If he sins against you seven times in a day, and seven times comes back to you and says, ‘I repent,’ forgive him.”
5The apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith!”
6He replied, “If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it will obey you.
7“Suppose one of you had a servant plowing or looking after the sheep. Would he say to the servant when he comes in from the field, ‘Come along now and sit down to eat’?
8Would he not rather say, ‘Prepare my supper, get yourself ready and wait on me while I eat and drink; after that you may eat and drink’?
9Would he thank the servant because he did what he was told to do?
10So you also, when you have done everything you were told to do, should say, ‘We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty.’”

Hihi..
what i wanna highlight here is that forgiveness is very important..
It's certainly nt easy for us to forgive somebody...
It would b hard for God to forgive us too i guess..
If God can forgive us.. why cnt we forgive others??

for there's nth impossible..
u want somebody to forgive u when u've done smth wrong...
then u also must forgive others when they've done smth wrong..
coz u knw that u also need forgiveness..

do to others what u want others to do to you...

:) God is love ^^

God loves everyone including children ^^

The Little Children and Jesus (Luke 18)

15People were also bringing babies to Jesus to have him touch them. When the disciples saw this, they rebuked them.
16But Jesus called the children to him and said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.
17I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.”

Let us always hv the faith like the children...
little kids or babies will not hv further doubts for their parents' act and decision..
bcoz in the deepest part of their heart.. they truly believe that their parents love them wholeheartedly... We must first believe God loves us completely before we can experience it.. bcoz our doubts is the thing that blocks us from believing how much God actually loves us.. I'm 100% confirmed that.. GOD LOVES U AND I...

:) so b happy... (:

God has a better plan for us :)

Hello everybody...
nice to see u again in my blog.. even though i din see u in real... lol..
well.. this post is gonna talk abt a wonderful plan of God for me...

Today... 04.10.09...
My church youth club a.k.a. MIF..
was havin songs composing competition...

There're 6 new songs bein composed by our MIF members... ;)
Thk God.. by His grace and mercy..
My song won d first place...
all glory be unto the Lord...

I hv nvr thought that i could hv won in this competition...
i guess u nvr know the story behind this song.. lol~

well.. actually there're a few person i hv to thank to for helpin me...
first of all is Zhi Yi... really must thank him alot alot..
coz he gave me encouragement and helped me in finding chords as well...
at the same time, i would like to thank Wei Jie for helpin me playing the guitar..
U're very Bang oh ^^

hmmm... the story behind this song starts like this...
actually i composed this song in early of this yr...
well.. it's bcoz we wanted to hv a theme song for our MIF..
but unfortunatelly... my song had been so-called rejected...
think abt it my frens.. in this kind of situation.. we'll surely think it's smth nt so good ryte?? i mean for most of the ppl will think like that.. perhaps i'm one of them..
Sorry Lord.. i was kinda upset when my song was been rejected at the time..

but God always has a better plan for us...
Who knws??
God has given me this oppurtunity to share with everybody this song..
and this song won d first place...
it's only by God's grace everything has been done..

so boys and girls...
nvr b so upset with ur circumstances now...
rmbr.. God's plan is way higher than urs..

we must always put our trust in God..
Believe that God will give us the best...

thank U Lord ^^

below is the lyric of this song.. ;)

G.L.O.W. – God Leads Our Way

There’s always something we don’t understand

There’s often sorrow we need to bear

Feeling down and no one understands

But we forget God leads our way

There’s one way

There’s only one way

Things will change and never be the same again

What’s the solution and what have we missed out

That’s God leads our way

Chorus:

Oh, God leads our way

Oh, God leads our way

God is love There’s hope

Life will change

God leads our way

Oh, God leads our way

Sorrow turns into happiness

And there’s nothing to be afraid

Bridge:

Sometimes we feel really down

That’s nothing we can trust

But don’t you remember God is with us

Why don’t you cast your burden

Ending:

I love You, I love You

Jesus, I love You (x2)
